Mission

My mission is a noble one, as I am very passionate about promoting travel to Africa and encouraging people to explore and discover the beauty of the continent. By igniting curiosity and educating people about the diverse cultures, traditions, and history of Africa, I will hopefully be helping to break down barriers and promote greater understanding and unity among people. Travel can be such a powerful tool for personal growth and meaningful cultural exchange, and by sharing my experiences and knowledge with others, I believe I am contributing to shape a brighter future for Africa and its people.

Travel Focus

By promoting travel and exploration within the African continent, the aim is to break down stereotypes and misconceptions about Africa, while also providing valuable opportunities for people to learn about and appreciate the diverse cultures and rich histories of the beautiful continent. Encouraging unity among Africans around the world is also one of my major goals, as promoting travel in Africa can help foster a sense of connection, unity, and shared identity among African people from different parts of the continent and the diaspora living in parts of the world, ultimately creating lasting relationships and understanding.

My name is Phumelele Ngcobo

I am an artist, teacher, and traveler from Durban, South Africa, currently exploring the African continent. I graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BA in Theatre and Performance, which focused on acting for stage and film, voice, movement/dance, and stage craft.

A Little About Me

After graduating, I spent a year in Johannesburg building my acting career but realized that I needed to broaden my horizons by traveling and living in other countries. In 2013, I moved to Moscow, Russia to start my teaching career and worked at an international school as a drama teacher and production director for five years. During this time, I was able to travel to several countries in Europe and Asia, which ignited my passion for travel.

In my fifth and final year in Moscow, I made the decision to visit my first African country outside of South Africa. This experience prompted me to reflect on my past travels and realize that I had not explored other countries on the African continent. I felt a sense of disappointment that I had prioritized countries in other continents over discovering the beauty of my own continent. This realization sparked a change in direction, and encouraged me to plan my next move and explore more of Africa.

In 2018, I returned to South Africa with a newfound desire to explore the African continent. During a walk with my sister in Brynaston, Johannesburg, the idea of traveling to all the countries in the African continent, whilst sharing my experiences with others came to mind. It was at this moment that 54African was born.

Where am I now

After spending 5 years in Saudi Arabia, I am now taking a year sabbatical to travel across Africa. My goal is to use my experiences to educate others about the incredible beauty and rich cultural diversity of Africa and actively combat negative stereotypes and misrepresentations of the continent.
